The Mammography Quilt Project 2020 - Present

The Mammography Quilt Project is a series created in honor of all the family and friends who have suffered from reproductive and gynecological-related illnesses. My job as a medical Intern at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains solidified my goals to unite reproductive health advocacy and visual art.

Using an archive of family mammography films, Quilt 2 is a 9’x 13’ linen and silk quilt. Each square is made using the cyanotype photo process and imaged with 20 years' worth of diagnostic films and local binary patterns used in mapping breast tissue. The backing, a gradient of surgical scrubs, houses over 150 publicly submitted names of those who have faced gynecological health issues. As an exploration of domestic craft and familial medical history, this series stems from a deep-rooted passion for health equity.

Mammograms are an important part of safeguarding your health, however may be expensive if you’re uninsured or don’t meet the criteria for coverage (often 40 years or younger). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) runs the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which provides low-income, uninsured, and underserved women with access to screening and diagnostic services for breast and cervical cancer. Several national cancer-support organizations offer financial assistance or offer access to free mammograms. If Medicare does not yet cover you, you have a low income, or you're uninsured, check with these organizations for help: Susan G. Komen Foundation Affiliations, American Cancer Society, American Brest Cancer Foundation, Planned Parenthood, & YWCA.
